IFC/CIDA/Netherlands - Carbon Finance for Africa

Carbon Finance for Africa is a project designed and managed by africapractice with funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Embassy of the Netherlands in South Africa. Its aim is to promote Africa as an important destination for investment in the growing market for projects in developing countries generating carbon emissions credits for sale in more industrialised countries.

The first main output of the project was a comprehensive Investors’ Guide, launched at the first ever 'Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol’ in Montreal, Canada, in November 2005. africapractice has also compiled a special Investors’ Guide focused solely on South Africa, the most promising destination in Africa for this new form of sustainable development finance.

Based on the Carbon Finance Guide for Investors published in 2005, africapractice developed an interactive online platform, which aims to become the leading carbon finance resource in South Africa and beyond. The website provides a wide range of information on carbon finance projects, including best practices, regulations and processes both for investors looking for opportunities in Africa, and for project developers looking for technical and methodological guidance, as well as access to potential buyers of carbon credits. It facilitates matchmaking for carbon finance projects through a showcase of projects, an interactive forum and a database of project developers and investors. www.carbonfinanceafrica.org.za
