Barclays – Growing me, Growing you
The private sector is widely recognised as the engine driving economic growth and Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) are the lifeblood of the private sector in most African countries. In 2005, Barclays commissioned africapractice to convene meetings in all major regions of Africa, in coastal countries and landlocked states, with fast-growing and mature economies to explore the constraints to further growth and how to overcome them for greater shared prosperity.
Meetings were held with public sector organisations and small and large businesses to hear ideas and recommendations from a variety of SMEs in a cross-section of industry sectors about the real barriers faced on the ground, preventing further growth into sustainable, thriving, taxpaying companies. The result, as stimulated by Growing me, Growing you, a research document published by africapractice, is a series of positive actions taken up by SMEs, big business, Barclays, and the public sector.
