We are recruiting for a Senior Consultant to join our London team, which acts as africapractice’s international hub, and work with colleagues in Nairobi, Lagos, Johannesburg, Dar es Salaam and Gaborone.

Role Purpose

  • Direct strategic communications mandates for clients and oversee service delivery in London
  • Drive innovation and build strategic communications capability in our consulting teams 
  • Lead engagement with international, pan-African business and trade media


Client service (70% of the role)

  • Direct client servicing on strategic communications mandates (leadership positioning, issues management and crisis communications, corporate communications, public diplomacy, advocacy and media relations)
  • Build relationships with clients as a trusted advisor on complex issues
  • Direct and manage assigned accounts efficiently and profitably; oversee quality service delivery by account teams; retain and grow mandates
  • Apply strong digital skills to design and execute creative, distinctive and data-driven advocacy strategies
  • Design and deliver innovative and effective media relations strategies to position clients strongly and effectively
  • Demonstrate industry knowledge and insights in several sectors reflecting our clients’ business (private equity, financial services, international development, natural resources and agribusiness, FMCG, infrastructure, telecommunications and technology)

Mentoring (20% of the role)

  • Mentor and coach colleagues in London and across the group on best practice in strategic communications
  • Contribute to the development of consulting tools, templates, methodologies and deliver training

 Business Development (10% of the role)

  • Identify and qualify leads, scope mandates, develop proposals and budgets and pitch to clients
  • Design and deliver marketing and thought leadership initiatives to generate new business leads and build africapractice’s profile and reputation amongst core target audiences 


  • Proven track record (6-8 years’ experience) designing and delivering strategic communications mandates for blue chip clients, including demonstrable experience advising clients in Africa
  • High level, current media contacts with international, pan-African and specialist trade media
  • Evidence of strong digital skills in action:Outstanding consulting skills, confident media relations specialist, robust project management skills, astute analytical capability and strategic thinking
    • Examples of production of creative digital-first multimedia content. Ability to create multimedia content directly a significant advantage
    • Examples of design and delivery of innovative and measurable online influencer engagement campaigns
    • Familiarity with data analytics to inform the design and evaluation of social engagement strategies
  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills, ability to motivate and support high performance from colleagues 
  • Industry experience in several of the following sectors: private equity, development finance, international development, natural resources and agribusiness, FMCG, infrastructure, technology
  • Outstanding written and verbal presentation and communications skills – proven ability to influence and advocate
  • Proven ability to build and manage complex and sensitive client and stakeholder relationships
  • Proven ability to drive business development (i.e. generate quality leads, write winning proposals and pitch persuasively)
  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic working environment
  • Fluency in French
