Job Title: Team Lead Newsroom

Organisational Setting And Reporting:

 The role is based in Mogadishu, Somalia, operating from a compound in the Mogadishu International Airport (MIA) complex secured by AMISOM. The position may require travel at short notice both inside and outside of Somalia and will require long hours.  Team Lead: Newsroom reports to the Project Manager/Chief of Party.

Background

GardaWorld International Protective Services (GardaWorld) is currently managing a contract for providing Strategic Communications support to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).  GardaWorld delivers the contract through the African Union/United Nations Information Support Team (AU/UN IST).

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with other Section Team Leads, leads the development, implementation and delivery of AMISOM, UNSOM and UNSOS’ Communication Strategies.
  • Manages the media agenda for the Newsroom including the big story ideas.
  • Builds high impact media relationships and partnerships that support the coverage of AMISOM, UNSOM and UNSOS’ mandate.
  • Secure frequent, high value coverage in key target outlets across print, online, and broadcast media.
  • Ensure that Press Officers, Photographers and Cameraman provide real-time content to feed AMISOM, UNSOM and UNSOS digital platforms.
  • Ensures Newsroom Tasking Orders are executed satisfactorily and with speed and will be able to measure output against expected deliverables and impact.
  • Ensures the Newsroom delivers its KPIs against set budgets as well as handle staff management and newsroom related administration issues.

Editorial Planning and Reporting

  • Be responsible for overall news planning, reporting, editing and production as well as assist with management, production and delivery of news
  • Define and maintain ethical, editorial, artistic and technical standards for print and visual coverage of the events unfolding in Somalia
  • Advise and work with the newsroom team in the distribution of news clips to news outlets globally and with a focus on Africa;
  • Supervise the activities of the newsroom staff in developing story ideas, tracking issues and events, selecting reporters for coverage of events, schedule stories for air/broadcast or print as situation may demand;
  • Schedule time for newsmaker interviewing, writing and editing
    • Maintain liaison with various internal and external constituencies to advance news programming (these may also include appropriate radio organisations);
    • Stand as the primary content manager during times of local crisis;
    • Serve as a final editor in ensuring news reports are produced in an effective, timely and responsible manner;
      • Make timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention

Team, Budget and Technology Management 

  • Monitor scheduling and performance of news personnel
  • Ensure team adherence to deadlines
  • Support the management of the news budget, including planning, regular monitoring, and routine handling
  • Manage the maintenance of equipment and information systems vital to news planning, newsgathering, news production and news presentation;
  • Works closely with Newsroom to prepare weekly and Monthly Newsroom reports.

Pre-Deployment Training

  • Work with the Project Manager/Chief of Party in managing Pre-Deployment Training of AMISOM Military and Police Personnel

Other responsibilities:

Deputise for the Project Manager/Chief of Party in their absence

Education

Holder of a Masters’ Degree in in one or more of the following: strategic communications, communications, public relations, international relations, broadcasting or other relevant disciplines. A first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

At least 10 years of experience in strategic communication and media management. Demonstrated ability to craft creative solution to a diversity of client needs is required.  Ability to manage and lead teams is essential.
