Job Title: Press Officer

The role

The role is based in Somalia (Headquarters in Mogadishu. Works closely with the Team Lead of News in ensuring the successful implementation of the responsibilities assigned to the IST team by its main clients (AMISOM; UNSOA and UNSOM.

Some of the responsibilities include:

  • Writing press releases and news reports about the work of AMISOM, UNSOM and UNSOS
  • Generating ideas to gain more media coverage of AMISOM, UNSOM and UNSOS
  • Developing media contacts
  • Monitoring media coverage of AMISOM, UNSOM and UNSOS
  • Attending press conferences and media interviews
  • Distributing press releases to local and international media
  • Writing feature stories relating to topical issues in Somalia or about AMISOM, UNSOM or UNSOS
  • Informing members of the public (as well as the press) about events and initiatives
  • Keeping up-to-date with all issues that affect AMISOM, UNSOM and UNSOS
  • Monitoring and analysing current local events, public opinion and press
  • Undertakes activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events
  • Produces information communications products such as press releases, feature articles, speeches and speaking notes and fact sheets
  • Assisting production plans; writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalising texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution
  • Developing content for social media platforms of AMISOM, UNSOM and UNSOS and ensuring they are shared with Team Leads Newsroom and Digital.

Personality and Role Requirements:  The PO is a mature media personality with considerable experience in newsroom-related activities and responsibilities. He/she should have exceptional writing and editing abilities, with a keen eye on detail and be a good team player.
