The position

The Consultant will play a key role in our Francophone Africa business, servicing and managing complex assignments requiring nuanced political and business intelligence and analysis and strategic advisory on stakeholder engagement. They will be responsible for building trusted relationships with clients and supporting business development efforts by identifying and developing leads and producing high quality proposals. There may also be opportunities to work on assignments in Anglophone or Lusophone Africa, particularly where a candidate has past relevant experience.


The Consultant is expected to build and maintain a network of government, industry and civil society sources in key markets across the region; run complex intelligence and risk consulting projects; provide expert political insight; and work with our strategy and engagement practices to develop effective market-entry, government relations and communications strategies.




Consulting services

  • Run complex political and commercial intelligence projects
  • Develop creative consulting solutions for clients facing specific challenges or opportunities in the region
  • Participate in client briefings on political, regulatory and commercial developments in the region
  • Develop, manage and advise on relationships with key stakeholders and contribute to stakeholder engagement strategies and plans
  • Network with key stakeholders to gather insight on their policies, attitudes, current plans and upcoming announcements
  • Ensure that consulting projects are conducted and delivered within the required timeframe while simultaneously satisfying africapractice’s quality standards
  • Build strong and profitable client relationships


Research and analysis

  • Produce regular, high quality analysis on political, regulatory and commercial developments in Francophone Africa
  • Maintain a high level of regional expertise through desktop research, attendance at relevant seminars and in-country intelligence gathering
  • Develop and maintain a network of expert contacts and subcontractors in the region


Marketing and Business Development

  • Support business development for africapractice across Francophone Africa by identifying leads and developing high quality technical proposals
  • Support marketing and PR initiatives to generate new business leads
  • Represent africapractice at Africa focused conferences and seminars


Media work

  • Provide expert comment to media and undertake broadcast work as requested


Role Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline, relevant Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 3-4 years’ experience working on, analysing and engaging with African politics, regulatory affairs and business affairs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to write clearly, concisely and authoritatively to tight deadlines and with great attention to detail
  • Business-level proficiency in French. Portuguese language skills also an advantage
  • Excellent strategic and analytical skills; strong and proven problem-solving capability across a diverse range of issues and situations
  • Experience in policy advocacy and excellent influencing, persuasion and engagement skills
  • A disciplined self-starter, able to work on their own initiative on complex issues, with minimal oversight
  • Adapts well to changing demands and ambiguous situations; shows an eagerness to seize opportunities
  • Excellent team working skills; ability to work in teams across different levels of seniority
  • Ability to cultivate strong trust-based relationships with people at all levels within the organisation, client organisations and the wider business and political landscape; knows how and when to ask the right questions with diplomacy and tact
  • Excellent knowledge of Francophone Africa’s political, operational and commercial dynamics
