Job Description – Political Analyst Southern Africa

 

Position: Consultant, Political and Business Intelligence

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa, with very frequent travel across Southern Africa

Line manager: Associate Director, Southern Africa

Type of contract: 2 year contract

We advise clients on political, regulatory, reputational and operational issues across Africa. We help our clients to identify and assess risks and opportunities and to develop and manage commercial strategies that deliver sustainable, profitable, high impact investments.

 

The position

The Consultant will play a key role in our Southern Africa hub, servicing and managing our Intelligence & Analysis accounts in the region, supporting Political and Business Intelligence and Analysis across the region and actively engaging with potential future clients and other important contacts in market.

The Consultant is expected to build and maintain a network of government, industry and civil society sources in key markets across the region; to run complex intelligence and risk consulting projects; provide expert political insight; work with our strategy and engagement practices to develop effective market-entry, government relations and communications strategies; and support business development efforts through strong client interface.

 

Responsibilities

 

Consulting services

  • Run complex political and commercial intelligence projects
  • Develop creative consulting solutions for clients facing specific challenges or opportunities in the region
  • Participate in client briefings on political, regulatory and commercial developments in the region
  • Develop, manage and advise on relationships with key stakeholders, stakeholder engagement plans, overseeing and co-ordinating mutually beneficial relationships built on a firm understanding of strategic priorities
  • Network with key stakeholders to gather intelligence on their policies, attitudes, current plans and upcoming announcements
  • Ensure that consulting projects are conducted and delivered within the required timeframe while simultaneously satisfying africapractice’s quality standards
  • Build strong and profitable client relationships

           

Research and analysis

  • Produce regular, high quality analysis on political, regulatory and commercial developments in Southern Africa
  • Maintain a high level of regional expertise through desktop research, attendance at relevant seminars and in-country intelligence gathering
  • Develop and maintain a network of expert contacts and subcontractors in the region

           

Marketing and Business Development

  • Support business development for africapractice across Southern Africa
  • Liaise regularly with africapractice’s offices in the region
  • Support marketing and PR initiatives to generate new business leads
  • Represent africapractice at Pan-Africa focused conferences and seminars

           

Media work

  • Provide expert comment to media and undertake broadcast work as requested

 

Role Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline, relevant Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience working on, analysing and engaging with African politics, regulatory affairs and business affairs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to write clearly, concisely and authoritatively to tight deadlines and with great attention to detail
  • Excellent strategic and analytical skills; able to develop realistic strategies to address problems of diverse nature
  • Experience in policy advocacy and excellent influencing, persuasion and engagement skills
  • A disciplined self-starter, able to work on their own initiative on complex issues, with only remote oversight
  • Adapts well to changing demands and ambiguous situations; shows an eagerness to seize opportunities
  • Excellent team working skills; ability to work in teams across different levels of seniority
  • Ability to cultivate strong trust-based relationships with people at all levels within the organisation, client organisations and the wider business and political landscape; knows how and when to ask the right questions with diplomacy and tact
  • Excellent knowledge of Southern Africa and detailed knowledge of political, operational and commercial dynamics in the region
  • Excellent contacts with local and foreign political experts, government officials and private sector players in the region; special interest in Angola, DRC, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, as possible
  • Excellent command of English; working knowledge of Portuguese or French a strong advantage
  • Experience in business development is preferred
  • South Africa work permit strongly preferred, though not essential.
